Sometimes when I begin a sculpture I start with a large block of stone, which says nothing to me at the moment. I will then put it aside and go on to another stone which speaks to me.
After several weeks I came back to this stone and began the creative process. As I started cutting into the block, I wanted to reduce the mass of the sculpture so I created a large negative space in the middle which would give the feeling of movement and drama.
The final achievement created both.
