The type of material that is used to create a sculpture always places certain constraints on what can or cannot be designed keeping the specific physical qualities of that material in mind. Up until about three years ago, all of my work had been created in stone and my design concepts had been focused on how I could work the stone to embody my design concepts.
Then, just about three years ago the Bonita Center for the Arts was offering classes in metal sculpture. I enrolled in the course. I started with steel but I became enamored with the physical qualities embodied in aluminum! it’s flexibility gave me a greater freedom of design. However, the tricky part was the welding process. Since the metal was soft, welding was a challenge.
I have since mastered the techniques needed and have completed several aluminum works. I now have mixed media works where I’ve combined aluminum with fused glass, L.E.D. lights and stone. The results are quite stunning.
