A colleague of mine once suggested that I try working with a stone known as black chlorite. He said it would surprise me when it was finished. It is a relatively soft stone with the hardness of alabaster, and he thought I’d be pleasantly surprised with the results I would achieve. Well, he was right! I have enjoyed sculpting in black chlorite and have continued to do so for the past several years.
The stone appears green from its mineral composition and when polished to an extremely high luster through much blood, sweat and tears it turns black. Yes, the finished result, because of its soft nature, requires many hours of work to eliminate minor blemishes and flaws, unlike harder stones such as granite, onyx or marble which are equally difficult to polish the hardness of the stone resists scratching.
It gives me a tremendous feeling of accomplishment to present fluid motion especially because it expresses such simplicity in design, although it has been one of my most challenging sculptures to bring to completion. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have had creating it!
